This morning im happy to write this article after seeing history made twice last night. The first one was seeing the first ever Muslim to win an acting award and the second being the most awkward moment in Oscar history!
That’s right Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor at the Oscars for his role in Moonlight playing a Cuban crack dealer named Juan.
Beating stiff competition from A list actors such as Jeff Bridges, Lucas Hedges, Dev Patel and Michael Shannon, Ali was emotional in his acceptance speech thanking his ‘wonderful teachers and professors’.
In a world where diversity is somewhat scarce at the moment, this award means more than just a actor winning an oscar – it’s massive middle finger to Republican rhetoric and right wing ideology that has been chastising the Muslim faith as a burden to our society. Ali’s dedication to his faith reflects in his humble personality and shows that you can beat the odds despite being a black Muslim in a racist industry.
This award also overshadowed the blunder of the best picture reveal where they wrongly announced La La Land as the winner where in fact it should of been Moonlight – massive awwks when they had to snatch that Oscar away from the La La Land team.
Anyway its a short one for me today as I’m trying to beat the morning traffic but I’ll end it with a big congratulations to Mahershala Ali, keep being an inspiration!
