Everyone is talking about, immigration. It’s a worldwide issue which has dominated politics for the last year and some argue was the main cause for the referendum for Brexit and why Trump got voted in.
So it comes as no surprise that twitter blew up last night over Ross Kemp’s latest documentary over the Libyan immigration crisis, the documentary being powerful and raw – it don’t hold back in illustrating the inhuman conditions these people live in and the life threatening risks they go through to make that dangerous journey to Europe.
The documentary also explores how Libya’s collapse in the years following Gaddafi’s removal has contributed to the refugee crisis.
Kemp gains access to desert regions run by tribal militias and a brothel where women are trafficked by smugglers.
He visits a prison where a man is being held ahead of sentencing accused of smuggling 2000 people into Europe.
The man in question talks to Keep about how he can earn £25,000 a week from just smuggling and he has been doing it ever since he was a child.
He said “I started when I was a boy working for a big smuggler. I got paid 500-1000 dinars to put migrants on a boat”.
He eventually graduated to running his own smuggling ring when he met some African middlemen.
Kemp asked “Do you expect these boats to make the journey”
The man replys that at a maximum the boats can last for 200 miles and that they hope that the European search and rescue teams will help the traveling migrants.
It is really shocking to visualise the squalor and depths people will go to, to try and make a normal life. I tweeted Nigel Farage to see if he was watching but of course I didn’t get a reply.
What is sad is living in a country where we are privileged to be in a society where we have access to luxurious living Conditions, we are now alienating ourselves away from these problems when we know we can help.
It’s definitely worth a watch and have to say its the best Ross Kemp doc I’ve seen, maybe because of the relevance or maybe because he didn’t shy away from even the most shocking parts to this problem.
